The book is about a shy hermit crab who, due to hard work and curiosity, turns, to his surprise, into a Grunchy Beast and is then moved to search for 'the Road', (wherever that might lead), and upon the search he encounters difficulties, strange beasts and others who are also searching, and finally after much difficulty (not giving away the ending) does find something that makes him happy.
